The best time to visit is November through May (dry season). December to February offers the calmest seas and clearest skies - ideal for island hopping. June to October is rainy season; some tours run but conditions vary. Avoid August to October if you want guaranteed good weather.
There are four official island hopping tours (A, B, C, D). Tour A is the most popular and best for first-timers - it covers Big Lagoon, Secret Lagoon, Miniloc Island, and Seven Commando Beach. Tour C is excellent for variety and slightly fewer crowds. You pay a one-time environmental fee (PHP 400) that covers all tours during your stay - don't pay it again for each tour. Each full-day tour includes BBQ lunch and snorkeling gear.
How to get there: Fly to Puerto Princesa (PPS), then take a 5–6 hour van or bus to El Nido (around PHP 250–500). There are also direct flights from Manila to El Nido (Lio Airport) on Air Juan - faster but book early as they fill up. Direct flights make a huge difference in comfort and time.
What nobody tells you: El Nido town itself is small and gets crowded in peak season (December–March). Book accommodation well in advance. The Big Lagoon kayak rental is extra (PHP 150) - worth it for the experience. Pay the environmental fee only once and keep your receipt. Also: there's no ATM that reliably works with foreign cards in El Nido - bring enough cash from Puerto Princesa or Manila.
My honest take after visiting multiple times: El Nido deserves every bit of its reputation. The Big Lagoon is genuinely one of the most beautiful places I've seen. Go in January or February if you can - calm seas, perfect visibility, and the blue of that water is something you don't forget.
